Concrete Furniture Design

Everywhere we look examples of cast concrete can be seen. Concrete has been around for thousands of years, but its versatility is enjoying a renascence that is seeing it appear in numerous non-traditional formats.  After all concrete is the most widely used man made material in the world.  It is natural to see it make an appearance in modern furniture, sculpture and art. The following pages of this site will focus on creating concrete art furniture. This stone like solution becomes the perfect compliment to wood, metal and glass in artwork that is exploring the contemporary world of art and furniture design. In the hands of a talented artist the material pushes them to explore new shapes and forms. This website is dedicated to that exploration of cast concrete. The examples above demonstrate how these nationally exhibiting artists address the use of concrete in their furniture and sculpture. This resource will also collect their stories, tips and techniques to help encourage other artists to experiment with this ubiquitous material.

Concrete was once relegated to outdoor furniture and garden sculpture.  No longer.  Concrete furniture design is evolving rapidly and cement furniture is making an appearance inside the contemporary home.  Cast concrete counters in the kitchen are one thing but furniture designers are bringing the material into the home in a very modern way.  This is a two way street and the bold look of cast concrete is adding to the vocabulary of form and changing the very nature of what one expects from todays furniture maker/designers.    This is due to the process of casting.  The concrete flows into the form and then solidifies to its shape.  These skilled craftsmen are able to coax shapes that are beautiful and serve as dynamic transitions in their work.  The resulting furniture or sculpture becomes more than the sum of their parts.  The cast concrete elements help to liberate the other materials.  The woodworker is no longer trapped by wood, the metal worker no longer trapped by metal the glass artist no longer trapped by glass.  Concrete allows those materials to take on a new role in the piece as the maker is liberated from traditional structure.  Concrete paves the way for new explorations.
